So you wanna make money while you’re at home with those babies of yours. Going from two incomes to one isn’t for the faint of heart!
If you feel like you have the time and energy to earn a little cash flow, I’m here to hook you up with some ideas. Hopefully something on this list will get your creative juices flowing!
If you love pets, become a dog host with DogVacay. Set your own rates and choose which breeds you’ll accept. You can opt to watch dogs only during the day (daycare) or for boarding only. Or both! DogVacay includes premium pet insurance and 24/7 customer care if you happen to run into any issues. Talk about a flexible way to earn money when you’re at home anyway.
You knew I’d have to start here, right?! Shameless plug: before you add extra tasks to your day, why not try to cut costs in your grocery bill by couponing? You’ll basically give your family a little raise with the savings you’re getting at the store.
Download the KCL App to see all the best deals at your favorite stores. Plus, I just wrote a brand new couponing quick-start guide (AKA couponing for non-couponers). So if you’re new here or you’ve never gotten the hang of couponing, get your free Quick Start to Couponing (coming soon!) and slash that grocery bill.
I met a guy who literally makes $12K per year selling books. If you’re up for taking your kids on book-finding treasure hunts with your BookScouter mobile app, this could be a good fit for you!
Yes, it’s easy money. No, it’s not a scam. Advertisers pay to have their products tested by normal people like you. There are all kinds of offers you can choose from, depending on what activity you choose. Cash out when you reach CashCrate‘s $20 minimum.
I love that this is a thing. There are a lot of reasons people may want to rent a room in your home. Maybe they want to try out your city and pretend they’re a local. Maybe they want to save on lodging while they’re visiting your city.
Depending on where you live, what your accommodations are like, how you choose to price your space, and of course, how much demand there is for your digs, you can make anywhere from $200 per week or more for one guest in one room when you list on AirBnB.
Nervous about doing this with small kids living with you? Rent out your whole house when you’re away on your family vacation.
This will be most lucrative for you if you’re open to having your teens or kids take surveys too, or if you live in a big city. Springboard America is good about privacy, as they don’t share any of your personal details. Find out how I made $50 with Springboard.
Looking at you, moms who love to write.
I’m also looking at you if you’re tech savvy, good with people, into accounting, or if you can design like a boss.
Because there are a lot of freelance gigs that might be just right for you. Upwork is a platform for people to find freelancers with the skills they need to finish a project.
Go to Upwork and set up your profile (let’s be honest, it’s more like a portfolio or resume, so make sure you have quite a few minutes). Once you’ve been approved, you can start trying to get work.
Upwork is a great way to build your portfolio if you’re new to your field. But it’s not going to make you bank as jobs are often bid out at very low price points. If you’re willing to exert maximum effort and you’re not counting on it being your only way to earn, you’ll do just fine!
Want to get your children outdoors? Have an eye for beauty?
Marry the two and you could have success selling your photos on Foap. Companies are always looking for fresh “stock” type of photography that doesn’t look like a stock image.
Make this your specialty and you’ve started a flexible and profitable little side business.
You’ll get $5 per download of your image. Yep, you read that right. It means you could sell the same image over and over. Point and shoot, mama!
9. Buckle up your babies and run errands for other people as a TaskRabbit tasker.
Make deliveries for other people on your own schedule and at your own pace. You can choose which tasks you want to take, and you can “nope” the ones you can’t do.
If you love to stay active, this may be a good fit for you. TaskRabbit has a lot of positive reviews from other SAHMs who have figured out how to be taskers even with a busy at-home life.
I know I’m not the first one to recommend this. If you’re crafty and you’ve been talking yourself out of selling your creations on Etsy, let me give you a nudge—just do it!
Etsy is a tried and true online marketplace with over a million shops. You really have nothing to lose if you’re doing (and selling!) what you love.
Keep in mind you’ll pay three fees: a listing fee, a transaction fee, and a payment-processing fee. You’ll pay $0.20 per listing you publish in the Etsy marketplace. This gives you four months to sell your item, and once it sells, you’ll pay a 3.5% transaction fee on the sale price (doesn’t include cost of shipping).
Clean out all the closets! I tend to do this naturally at the end of summer when I buy new school clothes for my kids, but you could do it as often as you want.
Order a “clean out kit,” which is a bag for you to load with all of your unwanted (but still in-good-shape and on-trend) items and ship them to ThredUp.
Anything ThredUp prices at under $60, they’ll pay you up-front for—just like a brick and mortar consignment shop does—and anything they value at over $60, they’ll consign and pay you when it sells.
Check the payout estimator to see how much money you can potentially make on your items. Enter the brand name and what your item is to see if it’s worth your time.
If you want to level up on this, plan to do your clothes shopping on ThredUp as well. You might only have to buy new clothes when your items are so loved and worn that ThredUp won’t take them.
Skip the used stuff! Make money off new items. If getting out of the house with your kids in tow sounds like an adventure you’re up for, try your hand at flipping clothes and shoes for a profit.
Best part? Since you’re not buying for yourself, no need to try anything on. Just look for high-end brand named items that have been marked way, way down.
Check out department store end-of-season clearance (think Dillard’s, Nordstrom, Macy’s) or brands you know are hot (J.Crew, Banana Republic, Anthropologie) and buy when you know you could turn a profit then sell on Inselly, an Instagram-based marketplace.
Post your items for sale via a photo on Instagram, and label and tag them with #inselly in order to start selling.
13. Comb thrift stores and estate sales for furniture you can flip for a profit on Craigslist.
SAHMs have been doing this for years. And yet, there’s still a market for it.
As long as you have creative ideas for upcycling out-of-style pieces, there’ll be a market to purchase your creations. Still doubt me? Just ask Joanna Gaines how profitable a creative mind + some old stuff can be.
Bonus: Join the midcentury modern craze and become an expert on the mid-mod vintage style. Many people still don’t realize how valuable these items are when resold (credenzas turn the best profit). Check out the furniture section of Craigslist or head down to your local thrift store.
For mid-mod treasures, be the first to visit estate sales. Be sure to drive a truck to go shopping in case you find a larger item you want to flip!
14. Start a blog easily through HostGator and then look into monetizing options.
Don’t believe them when they tell you the mommy blogger days are over!
The Internet is huge and people are always looking for great content. If you like to write and you have something to say or teach, get on the path to making a side income from your blog. Are your kids or pets hilarious? Do you get invited to parties just so you’ll bring your signature appetizers and desserts? Blog about it.
Hostgator offers the KCL community a killer deal, and I’ll tell you how to start a blog the right way in 4 easy steps.
If the thought of dragging your kids around town makes you feel like you need a nap, here’s one just for you, because you can do it at home.
It’s really as simple as it sounds. Sign up to be a home-based launderer and start taking clients in your area. If you enjoy doing laundry and you have good attention to detail, this may be a good fit for you.
Getting published used to be hard; self-publishing used to be expensive. No more.
Once you’ve written your manuscript, simply upload it to KPD, set your sale price, and start earning 70% royalty. It’s free and your eBook shows up next to everything else on Amazon within 24 hours. In order to really be a successful self-published author of an eBook, get cozy with social media, because you’ll want to tell everyone you know to go check out your new book on Amazon.com.
If you’re a teacher taking a break to be home with your kiddos, or you just have a lot of smarts in areas like math, sciences, or foreign languages, this is a great way to earn some side cash.
If you’re available to tutor at least 5 hours per week and you can pass a test in your chosen area of expertise, plus you’re passionate about education, check this one out! (Let me know what the pay is like–I haven’t tried it and can’t find out how much you’d make doing it.)
If you’ve started a career or gained experience as a voiceover artist, continue from home with VoiceBunny.
Obviously not for everyone, but maybe this is for someone!
Read email, watch videos, browse the Internet or play games online? Make money while you’re at it.
You can earn up to $40 per month with InboxDollars or $100 per month when you use these Swagbucks hacks.
Attorneys used to rely on focus groups and mock trials exclusively when trying to decide whether or not to take a case. Now Online Verdict offers attorneys a chance to get feedback about cases from people like you, while you’re sitting in the comfort of your own home.
What if you could make between $20-$60 per hour for 20-60 minutes of your time at your own convenience? I’m thinking once or twice a week during nap time (as opportunities are available) could turn a nice profit!
Have copywriting or graphic design skills? Know SEO? You can sell just about any skill for $5 on Fiverr. Quick, easy, and low commitment.
Set your own hours and make between $8 and $12 per hour, depending on experience.
You also get to choose what industry you’d like to work for, based on what you already know about products and services available. This one is more like a part-time job from home, if you prefer the stability a consistent job provides. Note that you won’t work directly for J.Crew or Walgreens. You’ll work for Women for Hire.
Testing websites through TryMyUI is a great way to make money while you’re at home. A huge part of actually getting gigs testing websites is being available to test right when you get the email invitation. Find out more information so you can make $200 per month testing websites!
So this isn’t one you could do at home exactly. But with Lyft’s flexibility, you can easily drive a few hours a week if your spouse is cool taking a turn watching the kids.
Not only is this a great way to get out of the house and meet new people, it’s lucrative too! I could make $200 driving here in Boise for 10 hours a week. Do as many or as few hours as you like—you set your schedule!
This isn’t all of you. But if you crave adult interaction or you’re coming to the end of your tenure as a SAHM and you’re not excited to go back to a traditional job, consider being a virtual assistant.
Working from home has so many perks! It may take some juggling and scheduling, but if you have administrative or project management experience, being a part-time VA may be a great fit.
Unfortunately, eaHELP doesn’t share their pay rate publicly. But one VA contractor reported on Glassdoor that they earn in the $15-$17 per hour range. Clearly, this is just one person, so weigh that with whatever your due diligence turns up.
Become a shopper, cashier, or driver with Instacart in order to make some side cash and interact with all kinds of different people.
Be aware that while this is a legitimate way to supplement your income, there are a lot of negative reviews of the company online.
In addition to getting coupons through Shopkick, you can earn “kicks” or reward points for completing shopping-related tasks.
Earn kicks for walking into certain stores, scanning products with your smartphone (no need to buy the product!), using your credit cards, or scanning your receipt. Cash your kicks in for gift cards!
Make a game out of using the Shopkick app with your kids. Let them find and scan products. Grab ice cream between your visits to stores, and make a day of it every now and then.
If you’re blogging already or you’re a social media fiend, sign up with MyLikes and share sponsored tweets, or place the MyLikes widget on your accounts to get paid per click.
MyLikes doesn’t pay out for Facebook, so don’t even bother with Facebook for this. But if you love social media marketing and you’re excited to grow your following, look into MyLikes. More followers = more clicks = more cash. Passive income rocks.
Love fashion and style? Don’t mind a selfie or two? Combine these two things for a great opportunity to make some money.
Take selfies in clothes from participating Stylinity retailers (no need to buy, just snap your selfies in the dressing room), upload your images to the site, and then share to get paid when people shop your look.
Are you a SAHM who loves to bring in a little cash on the side? How do you do it? I’d love to hear your story and tips in the “Comments.”
