Whether you are trying to come up with the next big invention or you are simply improving your previous invention, brainstorming can be a lot harder than it seems. To brainstorm it requires brain power to get your gears turning and focusing on your new ideas. Check out these 4 tips to help your brainstorming session be more productive.
Creative Worksheets
If you are stuck on where you want to go with your invention and how to start the process, download creative or learning worksheets to help generate business ideas. There are various worksheets on the web to help you think of the best business concepts for your personality. They can be questionnaires, adult coloring books or something as simple as an ABC Brainstorming exercise. Most worksheets are free and they can help you generate new ideas to get your brain thinking. Answering multiple choice, short answer or even open ended questions such as, “what do you enjoying doing so much you forget to eat during the day?” can help you jot down ideas and concepts to start your invention.
Free Writing
If you are more of a writer yourself, rather than jotting answers down on paper, let your own personal writing fill your blank notebook or Word doc. Start at the top of the page and let your creative juices flow by writing down everything which comes to mind. You can create your own questions which you want to answer, you could draw out what you are envisioning in your head, and basically you can do anything you want. By thinking openly you can see where your brain wants to take your invention idea. Try setting a timer and see what you can get onto paper by the time it goes off!
Mind-Mapping
Mind maps can be big, small, colorful or plain; the maps are developed by how you want to create it. Collect writing and drawing materials, and snatch up some printouts, magazines and other things that would help you get your invention idea started. Start in the middle of your paper with one image or word you consider the primary reason you are creating your mind-map. From there add subtopics which can be broken down even more to get to the very core of each concept. This exercise can help you identify the key problem or solution you are trying to solve. If you do not have a lot of materials around your house to help get your creative juices flowing, well there’s an app for that! Mind-mapping apps can help you create new concepts just like a physical one.
Group Thinking
Two heads are better than one, so grab a brainstorming buddy to listen and give advance about your ideas. Putting two or more people together can provide a diverse perspective on different issues. They can give insight on things you never thought of in the beginning. If you have an invention partner try role playing on how to solve a possible problem you could possibly encounter with your invention, or change roles in the company for the day. After you meet with someone you feel comfortable talking to about your idea, have your own brainstorming session right away so you can see how effective it was to meet with someone.
Brainstorming sessions require an open mind ready to generate good and bad ideas. You can brainstorm alone and with peers to help you improve what you have started. Robert Sutton on Bloomberg Business suggests to have one conversation at a time and to focus on one topic until you are completely finished with it. Whether you are thinking about the big start of your invention or you are thinking about how to market your final product, these tips might help you get where you need to be in the invention process.
