For anyone who's ever wished they could experience the joy and comfort of being eaten by a stuffed shark, one designer has created a menacing-looking sleeping bag that will make short work of the sandman. Dubbed the ChumBuddy, the 7 foot long stuffed killing-machine is sure to delight all who become ensnared in the shark's plush, gapping mouth, or who nestle in its soft, fleece bowels. Just imagine the joy of tucking your child in the shark's throat each and every night while reading them a bedtime story--Jaws the novel, perhaps?
While the ChumBuddy seems to be perpetuating the man-eating shark stereotype, the designer, Kendra Phillips, says it was made to make the sleek, aquatic killer more kid-friendly.
It's a sleeping bag! It's a stuffed toy! IT'S A SHARK! In an effort to make sharks (a very misunderstood animal that also happens to be one of my favorites) more cuddly, I designed and produced a prototype for the ChumBuddy.
There is, of course, nothing funny about shark attacks, but that's not to say the creatures couldn't benefit from a little softening of their image--after all, humans pose a far greater threat to sharks than they do to us, and some species are threatened by cultural practices. The ChumBuddy might actually be a good way to help put to rest the shark's bad rap, which sadly may diminish, to some, the urgency of protecting them.
And in the end, it would far better to wake up inside the belly of a stuffed shark than to world without the real thing.
